My son’s recovery has not only been a miracle but has also been extremely quick. I didn't know what to expect. Thinking back now, it all seemed so short.
Every morning I would wake him up, get him dressed, and prepare for the day. They had been working on him standing and taking steps.
In the beginning, they would have to support all his weight. One therapist held him the other moved his legs. They would tell me they could feel some engagement attempt when it was time to take steps. That made me extremely happy. I could see in my son's face the determination and confusion as to why he couldn't walk. It broke my heart. But my job was to be his cheerleader, so that's what I became.
One day I had to take a phone call. So they took him to the therapy room. I walked to the gym. When I entered, they said, "you want to show mom what you have learned?!"
They stood him up, and he looked at him. Then he took his first step. He moved his legs independently. His body was remembering. His brain was making the connections!
I told him how proud I was of him, he looked at me, and he had tears in his eyes. I hugged him, and we stood there hugging and being in the moment. All fears and worries about how his life would be were gone. For that moment, I was present. We were present!
Almost a year later, he isn't just walking; he runs, he jumps, he is happy!
